Review by Julian Upton on 18th May 2007

Sacrifice, survival, death, rebirth: the themes explored by this haunting, dreamlike drama – which sees a young man, Michal, escape the brutal slaying of his wife and child and flee to the streets of Nazi-occupied Poland – are not uncommon in films about war. What is different is how these ideas are conveyed in a series of startling scenes. As Michal progresses through one surreal encounter after another – helping to deliver a baby after a bloody shoot-out, working at a typhus centre as a lice-feeder for vaccine development – Zulawski saturates us with images that are portentous, provocative and graphic, and which convey more about the brutality of war and the human condition than could any conventional narrative. In its onslaught of nightmarish visuals, it could be seen as the proto 'Midnight Movie' (Michal's journey strikes parallels with those of the protagonists of El Topo and Eraserhead), but the film should also take its place alongside the recognised classics of Polish New Wave cinema.

A disorienting, disjointed fever dream in which colours convey as much of a route to truth as words, this charged, supernatural film of the Resistance and lice-feeding in wartime Poland has an unruly energy that frequently erupts into spasms of violence, but just as ...  View article in full

Pasquale Iannone's Films of the Year 2007 by Pasquale Iannone

2007 was another excellent year for DVD releases of classic films making their first appearance on home video in the UK. Special mention must go to Second Run with their wonderful, ever-impressive catalogue and also to Arrow for their Fassbinder releases. These are some of my highlights
