Film Description

A chick flick with much more bite and wit than normal, The Devil Wears Prada focuses on a new recruit to the fashion industry, who struggles with the breakneck pace and ridiculous demands made on her by her boss. What makes this concoction so enjoyable is a very funny, waspish script, and two Oscar-worth comic performances - My Summer Of Love's Emily Blunt as the heroine's snappy colleague, and Meryl Streep on marvellous form as the horrendous boss. Great fun.

Review by Alex Davidson on 18th December 2006

It's a shame this witty, acerbic comedy was mis-marketed as a ‘chick flick’/romcom hybrid, as its potential audience was immediately diminished. Although the main character is female, her primary concern is not how to snag Mr. Right, but how to survive in a cut-throat industry.
Anne Hathaway is wannabe journalist Andy who ends up working for a fashion magazine run by Miranda Priestly (allegedly based on Vogue's notorious editor Anna Wintour, here played with élan by Meryl Streep). Andy grimly perseveres with her permanently unreasonable boss, even as she demands the impossible, be it organising an aeroplane flight during a hurricane, or acquiring the latest Harry Potter before publication.
The film has two brilliant comic performances: Emily Blunt is terrific as Andy's heroically scathing colleague and Streep deserves an Oscar for the funniest role of her career. The caustic script is packed with her flawlessy-delivered putdowns. Her Miranda may be a monster, but what a monster.

I know, I know... give me the chance to write a 'Best Of' film list and I opt for chick flicks - well, if it wasn't for girls like me Hugh Grant would be out of a job... Hmmm, perhaps that's not necessarily a bad thing....
