Film Description
A classic ‘sound effect’ comedy to sit alongside such titles as Futtock’s End and The Plank, San Ferry Ann sees a motley crew of characters on a weekend getaway from Dover to Calais. A campervan family cause chaos with frequent run-ins with the gendarmes, lewd grandad (Wilfred Brambell) finds his own misadventures with a German ex-soldier and saucy hitchhiker (Barbara Windsor) causes heads to turn. A little comic treat from the sixties full of British acting talent.

Review by Graeme Hobbs on 18th December 2006
Joining A Home of Your Own, The Plank and Futtock's End are two more welcome additions to the ranks of 1960s 'sound-effect comedies'. San Ferry Ann (1965) sees a group of nonplussed and chaotic Brits in their Mini Travellers and Bedford vans take the Dover-Calais ferry for a camping weekend in France and create mayhem as they move from one embarrassment and misunderstanding to another. Numerous recognisable faces populate the piece, with David Lodge and Joan Sims as ma and pa and Wilfred Brambell as the grandad who gets to relive the war and partake in a drink-sodden reconciliation with a German holidaymaker. Dialogue has been transmuted into a series of mumbles, clucks, seagull squawks and chimp grunts and the film lifts a couple of its cycling gags from Tati's Jour de Fête.
