Snow Cake DVD
Snow Cake is a funny, authentic and highly affecting tale of catharsis. Alex (Alan Rickman) feels disturbingly unscathed when a hitchhiker dies in the car he was driving. Feeling responsible, he seeks out her autistic mother, Linda (Sigourney Weaver), a free spirit with an unconventional view of the greatest pleasure one can ever experience, stating: ‘an orgasm sounds like an inferior version of what I feel when I have a mouthful of snow’. We follow the pair as they each try to come to terms with their losses and former lives.
Weaver's Linda defeats all preconceptions about autism, portraying a woman who lives life on the edge of her emotions, yet is unable to connect to reality. There are some arresting moments in the film, such as when Linda dances at her daughter's funeral, and this sensitive representation of autism makes an interesting companion piece to Mark Haddon's marvellous novel ‘The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night-Time’. It pulls off the unusual feat of being able to make you simultaneously laugh and cry.
