Film Description

Brilliantly-scripted comedy drama about the effects a divorce has on a couple's two adolescent sons. Writer-director Noah Baumback based the story on his own parents' divorce, and his ear for dialogue lends the film some excrutiatingly true situations. Daniels, as the arrogant, insecure father, is particularly strong.

Review by Mike McCahill on 15th July 2006

All is not well in the Berkman's Brooklyn townhouse. Professor, fading novelist and literary snob Bernard's separation from wife Joan comes, not coincidentally, as the latter's writing career is just taking off. Their two kids pick sides and try not to get damaged by the fall-out.
Although the well-to-do-family-in-peril drama has become a marketable sub-genre in the wake of American Beauty, The Squid and the Whale has the virtues of a superior short story: it's painfully funny, pointed, and admirably honest about what becomes of its characters. Writer-director Baumbach and his performers turn petty squabbles into titanic struggles, the tiniest slight into a major betrayal. It's also a rare ensemble piece where every cast member brings something memorable to the picnic. There's a freewheeling debut from Owen Kline and hugely sympathetic turns from Anna Paquin and Halley Feiffer as independent women getting sucked into the mess. Linney's warm smiles linger long in the mind, but Daniels has the meatiest role, as a buffoon who somehow manages to maintain a level of pomposity while being wheeled into the back of an ambulance.

Mike McCahill's Films Of The Year 2006 by Mike McCahill

Another fine year for DVD releases – and the plethora of Special, Collector’s and Deluxe Editions currently being prepared for the Christmas market makes it as good a time as any to catch up with those films that never made it to one’s local megaplex. My selection reflects an unusually strong twelve months for American (and particularly American independent) cinema: here’s to more in 2007!

Top 25 DVD Film Releases of 2006 by Stephen

It seems to have be a bumper year this year for the release of films on DVD's - even though the range of films distributed in the cinema seems to be in one of its contracting periods. I have a small website (www.alt-flix.co.uk)in celebration of non-mainstream Films and have put together a list of 2006 Top DVD Film relases for that. The list here includes a real mixture of mainstream and more left field films but they all have have two things in common - firstly they received a DVD release during 2006 either in the USA or the UK, and secondly, each and every one of them are great movies.
