Review by Barry Forshaw on 3rd April 2005

Another highly desirable box from the ever-enterprising Arrow: this collection (including such films as Les Biches, Que la Bete Meure and La Femme Infidele) shows the French director in Hitchcockian territory that was a favourite stamping ground of his: murder, moral ambiguity and quiet desperation all tear apart the surfaces of the comfortable middle-class settings. Of particular note here is Chabrol’s cool and compelling take on Nicholas Blake's The Beast Must Die: the director has the full measure of this classic British crime novel and translates it effortlessly to a Mediterranean setting. While other directors of the French New Wave fell by the wayside, Chabrol consolidated his career longevity by making this kind of crime cinema his special preserve.
