Film Description

The third and concluding part of Park's trilogy of revenge. Intense and inventive, the film follows the progress of beautiful, impassive Lee Geum-ja after she has been released from prison having served 13 years for the kidnap and murder of a young boy. Once on the outside, she gets in touch with her former cellmates, gathering around her all the people needed to carry out her elaborate plan of revenge. Striking and ghoulishly entertaining, this is a film poised between horror, tragedy, comedy and exploitation.

Review by Mike McCahill on 24th March 2006

This third in director Park’s loose ‘Vengeance’ trilogy (after Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy) became one of the most successful movies in Korean history, perhaps the result of cinemagoers having to pay twice to make complete sense of it or double-checking whether they could truly believe what they saw first time around. A work of dazzling style and endlessly debatable substance, Lady Vengeance unfurls as an ornate series of flashbacks apt to leave the viewer punch-drunk on first viewing, making it ideal for reappraisal on DVD.

Released from prison after serving 13 years for a murder she didn’t commit, Geum-ja (an imperious Lee Young-ae) is torn between starting anew with her estranged daughter and a job decorating cakes, or going after the man who set her up, a dullard teacher played in Hitchcockian fashion by Park regular Choi Min-sik. It’s a much more delicate and florid piece than the loopy Mr. Vengeance or the rampaging monster of a movie that was Oldboy. Yet Lady Vengeance retains those films’ absolute unpredictability. Loaded with bespoke weaponry and bakery products, sight gags and slayings, this is real one-of-a-kind filmmaking.

Friday 2nd June 2006

It's a good bet that every day, someone, somewhere, is negotiating a deal concerning a film made in South Korea. They might want to distribute it or remake it in America or Europe or elsewhere in East Asia, but Korean film has for several years now been the hottest t...  View article in full
