Review by Steve Turner on 26th January 2006
Anyone who’s sick to death of the awful Star Wars prequels needs to see Serenity. An extension of director Joss Whedon’s TV series Firefly, Serenity is a terrific Sci-Fi western that capitalises on all the things we loved about the original Star Wars films and invents some pretty good stuff of its own.
Malcolm Reynolds (a charming Han Solo-esque smuggler) captains the decrepit space ship Serenity and together with his crew they exploit the black market in a future controlled by a corrupt organisation called the Alliance. When a deadly Alliance operative targets crew member River, a girl with telepathic abilities, the group go on the run to discover the dark secrets buried in her past.
While the film contains impressive action sequences and an inventive plot, it’s the camaraderie onboard Serenity that makes this film so fantastic. Lively banter, bickering rivalry and a smidgeon of sexual tension make the tense finale all the more involving. Whedon had already proved his calibre on the hugely successful TV series Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and this terrific film proves he is more than capable of making the transition to the big screen.
