In 1990 Rajkumar Santoshi made an amazing impact with Ghayal. 13 years down he is still a name to reckon with. When Gahayl was doing well and Amitabh's other movies in that period - Indrajeet and Akayla, flopped I thought that it was high time that Big B acted with someone higly talented, as Santoshi could could do justice to the Superstar of the Millenium.

Years later Big B made a tremendous comeback with KBC on the small screen. Although his movies released after KBC also got him rave reviews but somehow I could not find the fire of the old Bachchan in his new movies. Whether it was K3G, Kaante or Ankhen I simply disliked Amitabh for hamming, overacting and looking like a pale shadow of himself. To be honest I did not like him even in Baghban except for a few songs.To top it the silly advertisement he did on television made me dislike my all time legend all the more.

So by the time Khakee was anounced I had lost all excitement of seeing Amitabh-Santoshi film. But Santoshi's last movie The Legend Of Bhagat Singh had struck a chord with me.I was bowled over by the direction and obviously by Ajay Devgan. When the promos of Khakee started coming on music channels I was bowled over from the first day. From the promos itself I knew that Santoshi has made a terrific movie and Amitabh will be in top form. To add to all this the prospects of watching a clash between Amitabh and the deadly Devgan raised the expectations. Without going over the top I must say that Khakee was my most awaited movie of the decade.

Luckily for me the movie succeeds in fulfilling the expectations and much more - the real Superstar of Hindi cinema gives a performance which is simply superb. Khakee brings back Amitabh in top form and is his best film since Agneepath in 1990.

DCP Anant Srivastava (Amitabh Bachchan) is an honest police officer who is on the verge of retirement. Although he has a clean track-record he could never really rise in the police force. He gets an award for his contribution to Police and along with it gets a dreaded mission of shifting an ISI agent Iqbal Ansari (Atul Kulkarni) from Chandangarh to Bombay. Anant's daughter is about to get married and his wife (Jaya Prada) does not want him to go on the mission. But Anant makes his mind to go on the mission alongwith Sr. Inspector Shekhar (Akshay Kumar) who is a corrupt officer and is not willing to go on the mission. There are a couple of constables along with them and Sub Inspector Ashwin (Tushar Kapoor) is also in the team. Ashwin is a new entrant in the force and is all full of passion and desire to do something for the force.They meet a social worker Mahalakshmi (Aishwarya Rai) who also joins them in the mission.

However there are people who don't want the mission to be completed.There are ministers and senior officers who are linked with it and the person who tries to stop the police team is the dreaded Angere (Ajay Devgan). What follows now is a cat and mouse chase. There are many twists and turns after which Anant suceeds in bringing Angere to the court.
The biggest asset of Khakee is its storyline. The script, written by Santoshi himself with the help of Sridhar Raghavan is very interesting and has many twists. The screenplay by the duo is amazing and the movie has the pace of the thriller in the first half. In the second half the movie moves more into a political scenario but instead of some dramatic sequences the script holds the viewer's attention till the end.

Music is good but the theme song 'Aisa Jadoo' holds special mention. Santoshi directs the movie flawlessly giving scope even to the smallest actor to emote and perform. Due to a cohesive script every character is developed well and the movie becomes extraordinary in all department.

Cinematography by K.V.Anand and action by Tinnu Verma deserve special mention in this technically superb movie. The action sequences between Amitabh-Ajay and Ajay-Akshay are excellent. The movie belongs to amitabh bachchan all the way. He gives a performance which is equivalent to his cult performance in Agneepath a decade and half ago. He is simply superb in every frame. It was a tough role even for Big B and although he has played a not so young police officer in disasters like Akayla and Indrajeet he manages to make Khakee one of the best cop movies ever made. Akshay Kumar surprisingly is excellent. He gets some really funny lines and acts in a rather classy way. From his first scene till his last scene he does a tremendous job and it is definitely his life's best performance. Ajay Devgan as the baddie is menacing. Although he played an anti-hero in Company and did a negative role in Deewangee yet his all villain act in Khakee is different from these and all the more scary. Aishwarya looks amazing after a long time and proves that she can act. Tushar Kapoor also surprisingly does justice to a role which was initially offered to Akshaye Khanna. A GREAT MOVIE. < less
