Review by R. Dixon Smith on 21st October 2005
Chaplin burst onto the cinematic scene in 1914, under the aegis of Mack Sennett, for whom he made thirty-four shorts and one feature. He moved to Essanay in 1915 and made fourteen shorts which made Chaplin a household name and established his little tramp character as a major worldwide phenomenon. In February 1916 he signed a contract with Mutual that paid him $10,000 a week plus a $150,000 bonus and made twelve shorts in 18 months. From the balletic grace and of One A.M. to the subtle pantomime of The Floorwalker and The Count, it was here that Chaplin perfected the two-reel comedy while increasing the social awareness of his films. With their blend of slapstick, satire, irony, pathos, and optimism, Charlie's ‘Mutuals’ are arguably his greatest creative works and volume 2 contains The Floorwalker, The Fireman, The Vagabond, One A.M., The Count, and The Pawnshop. All are definitive restorations and feature new scores by the great Carl Davis. These little masterpieces show why it is said that Chaplin-together with Mickey Mouse and Elvis Presley-is one of the most universally recognisable figures of the twentieth century.
