Film Description

Adapted from Frank Miller's graphic novels, this is a striking modern film noir infused with fantasy, taking place in a world where it is eternally night and everything is drenched in rain and violence. Using a unique combination of silvery black and white digital photography with occasional flashes of bright colour and with lines delivered flatly in the hard-boiled style of Raymond Chandler, these tales are about crime, love, loss and being tough.

Review by Steve Turner on 5th September 2005

Adapted from Frank Miller’s graphic novels, Sin City comprises three tough tales of seductive dames, corrupt cops and grotesque killers. The stories are awash with cannibalism, dismemberment, paedophilia, and torture. In fact they include most of the nasty, vile, disgusting things you could ever possibly think of and yet, as Miller's energetic drawings spring to life, Robert Rodriguez’s gleeful enthusiasm for this gory subject matter and his ingenious combination of digital effects and prosthetics reveal it to be more Tom and Jerry than Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The comic touches and affected visuals desensitize the violence and create a thrilling cinematic experience.
The casting too is a dream. Bruce Willis, Clive Owen and Mickey Rourke head up the hard-nosed good guys, each narrating their noir-ish tale with the gravely-voiced clichés required, but it’s Benicio Del Toro who really steals the show. In a scene directed by Quentin Tarantino, he delivers a sickening slice of black humour that has to be seen to be believed. Some may find Sin City all too much, but those who dare will discover a startling mutant noir that you will not easily forget.

My Favourite DVDs of 2005 by Mike McCahill

Showing up at press screenings recently, I’ve been struck by just how many films these days are being released in cinemas solely to emerge on shiny silver discs only a few weeks later. DVD has, it seems, become the dominant medium of our time, sending Hollywood bosses into panics over piracy and falling box-office receipts. They now understand what the rest of us knew all along: that whether allowing us to watch a TV series without ad breaks, catch up on something missed in cinemas, or see an old favourite in a new, digitally-remastered light, the disc takes some beating. I’d be happy to find any of the following ten under the Christmas tree this year, though I wouldn’t envy my family’s attempts to pry my fingers from the remote control...
