What a boon the DVD era is! No longer need ‘lost’ films remain lost – when Welles’ Magnificent Ambersons was cut by the studio, his original was junked. OK, we’re not talking Orson Welles quality when it come to Paul Schrader’s prequel to The Exorcist, but it’s still fascinating to see the film that the studio was so dismayed by it commissioned a new, more bloody movie from Renny Harlin. As with the ever-intelligent Schrader, of course, this is a much more challenging piece of work than the released movie, with some excellent acting and a genuinely unsettling atmosphere. Where it fails – and here the studio was right - is in delivering the final chilling incarnation of evil that William Friedkin's film managed in that Washington bedroom.
