Review by Michael Brooke on 9th August 2005
It's hard to convey the impact of John Cassavetes’ films when they were first released – and, since his untimely death in 1989, their patchy distribution has ensured that he’s better known for his acting (Rosemary’s Baby, The Dirty Dozen) than for his immeasurable influence on half a century of American independent film. Despite his Hollywood background, Cassavetes’ work wilfully refuses to play by established rules: scenes play in what seems like real time, dialogue is rambling and naturalistic, and the camerawork is as freewheeling as the jazz improvisation that inspired his first film, Shadows (1959), a groundbreaking study of interracial relationships in New York City. His best films often starred his wife Gena Rowlands: in Faces (1968), she’s the ‘other woman’ in a Bergmanesque study of a troubled marriage, depicted in such pitiless detail that it almost seems as though Cassavetes is forcing his audience to eavesdrop on deeply private anguish. As A Woman Under the Influence (1974), her growing mental illness causes her husband (Peter Falk) almost equal trauma in trying to hold their marriage together, while in Opening Night (1977), she’s a stage actress whose professional and personal life is shattered by the death of one of her fans (Cassavetes himself plays her co-star). The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) initially seems like the wild card in this particular pack, its story about the Mob demanding favours from Ben Gazzara’s nightclub owner more suited to a pulpy thriller - but in Cassavetes’ hands it’s an engaging character study whose plot is merely a passing distraction. This new DVD set contains all five; a release welcome, long overdue and utterly essential.
