Review by Steve Turner on 22nd July 2005

The fact that Hideo Nakata was invited to direct a sequel to the US remake of his own horror masterpiece is strangely cyclical in itself. Having already written and directed a Japanese sequel to Ringu, Nakata follows an American script that, to its detriment strays further from the original concept. The simplicity of the ring is muddied as the film follows Rachel (Naomi Watts) and her son Aidan attempting to escape increasingly inexplicable life-threatening situations that are no longer confined to videotape. The films most frightening moments bookend the film. Firstly a teenage boy tries to save his own skin by duping his date into watching the cursed tape, and finally, Rachel faces Samara in the terrifying darkness of her well. In-between is a confusing, strangely un-affecting mess of worried looks and dripping ceilings. The real find is on the extras - Rings is the story of an internet cult who enter into a deadly game of chicken daring each other to watch the tape and record the incredible and frightening things they see. With only seven days to live, the participants see how long they can last before passing on the curse. This lean, mean video diary contains twice as many shocks and scares than the main feature and leads directly up to the fantastic opening scene of Ring 2.
