The Merchant of Venice (BBC, 1980)
Film Description To help his friend Bassanio's cause in love with Portia, Antonio approaches the money-lender Shylock for three thousand ducats, who agrees to help him under the provision that Antonio shall forfeit a pound of his flesh if the debt is unpaid. Antonio's ships are wrecked and Shylock calls in the debt. In a production full of contrasts and ambiguities, Warren Mitchell plays the moneylender with a finely balanced combination of wickedness and pathos, leaving the audience to decide if he is villain, buffoon or tragic hero.
