Review by Milo Wakelin on 16th April 2007

Directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, one of Disney's 'nine old men' (the studio's core of original animators), Robin Hood recasts the quintessentially English legend with a menagerie of furry creatures, including a pair of peerlessly-cast comedy-villains in the form of cowardly, thumb-sucking Lion Prince John (Peter Ustinov) and his slippery hench-snake, Sir Hiss (Terry-Thomas). Sherwood forest is given a laid-back, country and western feel; the songs include the outrageously catchy opening theme, ‘Whistle-Stop’ (‘The Hamster Dance’ to internet aficionados) and the toe-tapping ‘Phoney King of England’.
Disney's 21st animated feature, Robin Hood was the first film to enter production after Walt himself was put on ice, and its success was the first indication the studio could continue its winning formula of revisiting classic stories with memorable characters, winning animation and great songs. Available on UK DVD for the first time, this special edition is an opportunity to rediscover one of Disney's oft-forgotten classics.
