Review by Alex Davidson on 24th December 2007
Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, one of the most timeless plays ever written, and still frighteningly relevant today, is astutely adapted for the big screen in this underrated Joseph Losey film. A key feminist work, Ibsen created an incredible character in Nora, who graduates from kept housewife to emancipated heroine when a secret from her past returns to haunt her.
In a brilliant move, Losey opens out the suffocating claustrophobia of the play by including some breathtaking shots of Norway; at the beginning, the shots of ice-skaters and joyful children demonstrate the twee, chocolate box environment that has trapped women in their feminine roles of powerless mother and wife. As grim reality creeps into the schmaltzy idyll, however, the landscape becomes bleaker - and more beautiful.
Jane Fonda, not a natural choice to play the initially dependent protagonist, is surprisingly strong in the role. Nora’s riveting final scene with her husband is a challenge for any actress, and Fonda delivers it superbly. Ending with the most devastating door slam in drama, this is an intelligent and powerful adaptation that deserves a wider audience.
