Recommended A Wedding

Robert Altman, 1978

Star Review

A Wedding has been unjustly neglected in the past – it has the reputation of a minor Altman film, another of his flawed efforts. Yet it is difficult to see why – in style and substance it is an amalgamation of the revered Nashville and Gosford Park, and whilst not up to the pedigree of the former (few are), it brightly outshines the latter. Crucially, A Wedding makes great use of Altman’s key traits – a mesmerising, freewheeling structure and an impeccable, expansive ensemble cast.
After the titular ceremony is completed, the meat of the film begins. Played out in near real-time the two newly joined families – one nouveau riche and southern, the other old money from Palm Beach – mingle, get drunk and stumble through a series of embarrassing and amusing situations, all the while hunted by an intrusive film crew. Through great technical skill the viewer becomes an invisible, honoured guest at the party - privy to the most revealing and entertaining exchanges, present at the key moments of crises.
A well rounded blend of wit, affection and conflict, this is among Altman’s most satisfying films and well deserving of a re-appraisal.
