Review by Alex Davidson on 7th June 2005

An unusual exercise in the cruelty grief can provoke, Tod William’s grimly amusing The Door In The Floor is a demanding but rewarding work. Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger star as Ted and Marion, a married couple who have suffered the deaths of their two sons in a car accident. As their relationship disintegrates, Ted, a writer, hires a young assistant, deliberately and sadistically chosen for his physical resemblance to one of the dead sons, and who acts as an emotional catalyst that will change the status quo for ever. Basinger, like Nicole Kidman, is an actress who excels in very serious parts, and her drawn face is a haunting image of repressed anguish. Nevertheless, this is Bridges' film - his depiction of unconfronted tragedy masked through affected optimism is heartbreaking, and his destructive decision to procure a lover for his wife (he already has a mistress) adds a complex poignancy to the drama. Thematically similar to the excellent In The Bedroom, this is modern adult drama at its best.
