Review by Alex Davidson on 7th May 2005
In the case of James Dean, three films and a car crash created an unparalleled icon. In all of his films he plays a young man unable (or unwilling) to adapt to the accepted norms of his position in society. In East of Eden, playing the rogue son Cal, forever in the shadow of his wholesome, ideal brother (whom his father loves), the character's self-destructive urge is tempered by his attraction to Abra (Julie Harris), his brother's girlfriend; in these scenes, Dean has never appeared so tender. In Giant, Dean's oil tycoon is ruined and corrupted by wealth (echoes of Douglas Sirk here) whilst the upright Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor triumph through effortlessly emulating traditional American values. In Rebel Without a Cause - more of a morality tale than a rallying cry for America's youth, Dean dodged the potentially exploitative nature of his role and rendered Jim Stark as one of the great tragic heroes of 1950s melodrama. The endless magnetism of the young, dysfunctional male was rarely as potent as in these three films.

Review by Barry Forshaw on 1st July 2005
Who knows if James Dean's spectacular (and short-lived) career would have imploded quickly if he'd not taken that fatal car ride? Would he have ended up as bloated as his idol Marlon Brando, appearing in an ever-less impressive sequence of films, taking the money and running? The question, however, is academic: this splendid collection shows what a remarkable legacy the actor left, not least due to his considerable luck working with three great directors:
Elia Kazan, Nicholas Ray, and George Stephens.
