The Band Wagon
Film Description Astaire effectively plays himself in this musical which is also one of Minnelli's best. Astaire dazzles in numbers set in a train station, a penny arcade, Central Park and a smoky cafe, the latter two with Cyd Charisse. Review by Barry Forshaw on 6th June 2005 Anyone with the slightest interest in the classic Hollywood musical will be in seventh heaven with this selection of some of the finest work in the genre. Legendary MGM producer Arthur Freed is the force behind several of the movies, and of the stars – Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly – absolutely nothing needs to be said. There is an unseen hero who should be noted: the orchestrator Conrad Salinger, creator of that sumptuous MGM sound: his work (notably in these amazingly spruced-up prints) is heard to its finest advantage ever. Martin Scorsese's Personal Journey by Clinton Morgan In 1995 Martin Scorsese made a three part documentary on American cinema for the British Film Institute. During the 100 years of cinema celebrations that were held on BBC2 and Channel 4 his was the best. It is worth watching when you get a chance and indeed it does make you want to see the movies he mentions. Some of them I have listed here.
