Review by Mike McCahill on 20th January 2005

There are few greater illustrations of the cultural difference between Britain and the U.S. than the varying approaches of their leading documentary filmmakers. Where Michael Moore barges into corporate towers, crew in tow, demanding answers from lowly receptionists, Britain’s Nick Broomfield stumbles around, carrying his own equipment, and being unfailingly polite to everyone he encounters. The approach invariably lulls his subjects into revealing more than they might under duress.

Previously, only Broomfield’s later, better-known films - his two
documentaries on Aileen Wuornos, The Selling Of A Serial Killer 1992)
and The Life And Death Of A Serial Killer (2003), and his rap death
investigation Biggie And Tupac (2002) - have been widely available. This new collection fills in some of the gaps in a thirty-year filmography, giving a better picture of the remarkable diversity of topics Broomfield has so far tackled. Seriously, when was the last time you had the opportunity to buy a box set bringing together Margaret Thatcher, Eugene Terreblanche, one of Hollywood’s premier working girls, and a whip-cracking, rubber-clad dominatrix?
