During the course of one long night, Vincent (Tom Cruise), a ruthless hitman, holds a taxi driver, Max (Jamie Foxx), hostage while they drive around to complete his hit list before dawn. Evocative of his early work and shot mostly on High Definition Digital cameras, Michael Mann returns to the darkness of LA, creating a stylish, intense thriller out of the simplest of plots. Mann has always been expert at creating mood, and he surpasses himself here, whilst the hunter/hunted dynamic grips from the moment the two characters meet. The action set pieces are brilliantly handled, with a particularly chilling sequence in a nightclub, where Max, unseen, picks off his victims one by one. After the lackluster Ali, Michael Mann is back at his best.
