Super Size Me
Film Description Attempting to answer the question, 'Why is America's populace so fat?' and using himself as a guinea pig, Spurlock sets out to eat only what is sold on McDonalds menu three times a day for a month to see what effect it has on his health. Review by Jamie Smith on 29th October 2004 ‘Super Size Me’ is a serious but witty look at the all-pervasive, all-consuming rise of the US fast-food giants. Director Morgan Spurlock sets himself the impossibly revolting challenge of entering a McDiet - for an entire month, he will eat nothing but McDonalds. Spurlock becomes depressed, lethargic and rapidly increases in weight. His doctor tells him his liver is becoming like that of an alcoholic and his girlfriend complains of a lack of sexual drive. Spurlock’s critics say that McDonald’s was a soft target for a youngish movie-maker keen to shoot his first feature-film. But the effect has been profound. The Super Size options at the Golden Arches restaurants have been dropped and a quasi-healthy menu has been brought in. Spurlock is hilarious in ridiculing the arguments of the food lobby. In the year of the American documentary, ‘Super Size Me’ is an important component in the nation’s self-critique. View more reviews by Jamie Smith
