Like Lukas Moodysson’s Show Me Love, Blue Gate Crossing eloquently captures the vagaries of budding teenage emotion and sexual awakening.

Serious-minded tomboy Ke-Rou and the cute, popular Yueh-Zhen are unlikely best friends. When it’s revealed that Yueh-Zhen has a crush on Shi-Hao, the school’s hunky swimming star, Ke-Rou reluctantly agrees to act as the go-between. But Yueh-Zhen turns shy and runs off whenever Shi-Hao appears, continually leaving Ke-Rou in the lurch. One evening by the pool, Shi-Hao confronts Ke-Rou, who tells him her friend has a thing for him—but he simply thinks the ‘friend’ is imaginary and it is really Ke-Rou who has the crush. Shi-Hao shifts his focus from winning races to winning over Ke-Rou, but her love for someone else results in devastating and shattering consequences when the true object of her affections is finally exposed.

With exceptional performances from the young actors, subtle direction and exquisite cinematography, this charming exploration of an irresolvable teenage love triangle is
achingly well-observed and told from a distinctly Asian
perspective.
