A Rather English marriage is one of those delightful screen presentations which come from The UK now and again, where subtle acting, script economy and empathatic direction work seamlessly. The story line isn't clever or quirky or unusual, but it does offer a fine vehicle for Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay, and Joanne Lumley to develop likeable screen characters. They do this with the consumate ease coming from decades of combined experience in their careers. The subtle changes in the relationship between Finney and Courtenay come about more through their facial expressions than in the dialogue, and the obvious class differences are pointed but not too political. That this is a good quality movie is proven by the way it holds up on second and third viewing as there is more to see in it each time. Don't miss this for a smile or two, and a memory.
