Film Description

Jerry is an up-and-coming writer waiting for the big break. After falling in love with the volatile Amanda, he turns to his paranoid and misanthropic 68-year-old colleague for advice. Better than a lot of recent Woody Allen movies, this twisted update of Annie Hall is still miles ahead of the usual Hollywood fare.

Review by Julian Upton on 2nd December 2004

Year after year, Woody Allen makes consistently good films - small, unusual, idiosyncratic pieces that serve to decorate the body of his oeuvre in surprising and revealing ways - yet the critics grow more and more despondent. But Anything Else shows that the great man still has some surprises up his sleeve - and this time he wisely stays on the sidelines of its central romantic entanglement. A kind of twisted, distorted Annie Hall, it tells the story of Jerry (Jason Biggs), an easy-going, up-and-coming comedy writer waiting for the big break. After falling in love with the volatile Amanda (Christina Ricci), Jerry turns to his paranoid and misanthropic 68-year-old colleague, Dobel (Allen), for advice. It soon becomes clear, however, that Dobel can’t manage his own life, let alone anyone else’s. Anything Else still contains plenty of Allen’s incisively funny lines to cut through audience prejudice and apathy, and it’s all bathed in a sumptuous visual glow that testifies to his enduring love of New York City
