Review by MovieMail on 1st September 2004
After Gosford Park Altman stays on top form with The Company, his look at personal and professional lives inextricably entangled in the pressure cooker of a ballet company. Malcolm MacDowell plays the artistic director, Neve Campbell the dancer on the edge of breakthrough to principal and the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, the company. Like Guy Maddin’s Dracula earlier this year, Altman gets his camera right in amongst the dancers and produces a filmic record second to none of the exceptional beauty and grace of dance. That is quite enough reason on its own to see this film but McDowell and Campbell both do well to produce good characterisation and story to satisfy the rest of us.
