Review by Garey Ramsey on 4th August 2004 Sean Connery dons a cassock and places his tongue firmly in cheek to play Franciscan sleuth Sir William of Baskerville. Adapted from Umberto Eco’s high-brow whodunnit of the same name, Connery is summoned to a Benedictine Abbey to investigate a series of increasingly macabre and comical murders. Set in 1327, the pervasive atmosphere of unspoken terror and medieval murk are perfectly drawn. Aided by a fresh faced Christian Slater as his apprentice, Connery battles against time to solve the crimes before the arrival of the Holy Inquisition in the form of Bernado Gui, played with gusto by F. Murray Abraham. With additional doses of sin, superstition and hysteria to contend with, Connery and Slater play Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson to Abraham’s Moriarty in a race to secure the fate of the monastery. Superb fun, and worth watching just to see Ron Perlman’s show stealing turn as mad hunchback Salvatore.
