Review by Pasquale Iannone on 5th July 2004

A true pioneer in the development of the aesthetics of film, Jean Renoir worked ceaselessly during the 1930s. His fourteen films, from La Chienne (1931) to La Règle du Jeu (1939) served as an inspiration to a host of young filmmakers, among them Luchino Visconti and Orson Welles.
Le Crime de Monsieur Lange (1935) - a beautifully shot comedy-thriller centred around a workers’ co-operative - features great dual performances from Jules Berry as both the lecherous publishing boss and his guileless son.
La Grande Illusion (1937) was lauded as Renoir’s landmark anti-war statement but also serves as an ironic examination of the futile attempts at understanding and integration within a rigid class structure.
Renoir’s only true foray into the stylised, fatalistic realm of poetic realism, La Bête Humaine (1938) features a powerful, career-defining performance from Jean Gabin as mentally unstable train driver Jacques Lantier battling with his murderous impulses and his love for Séverine (Simone Simon).
