Review by Barry Forshaw on 2nd August 2004

Three of the most powerful masterpieces of cinema receive exemplary DVD transfers, as Ingmar Bergman’s filmic legacy gradually makes its way onto the new medium. Hour of the Wolf is one of the cinema’s great nightmares, while Shame is a terrifying (and deeply affecting) picture of what war does to the human soul. All are, of course, acted by the director’s regular company of actors in performances that make all other film acting look synthetic. MGM also have Bergman’s English-language misfire The Serpent’s Egg; still, of course, interesting.
