Review by Joseph Shoemaker on 10th September 2004 The Card Player is Dario Argento's return to form as master of the suspense thriller. Here's the story: A madman is challenging the police to games of video poker with the body parts and lives of his victims as the "stakes". Once again it is not so much the story but the visual style and "squirm factor" Argento brings to telling it. There are several scenes that are difficult to watch as has always been true in classic Argento movies. I can't give details so as not to reveal too much but his move towards the more modern realm of shows like CSI and those types of reality programs gives this film more realism and will appeal to both his fans and newcomers. I also think the music by Simonetti is his best. The ending featuring the killer, the heroine and a speeding train on the train tracks all revolving around a video poker game is truly amazing.
