Review by Alex Davidson on 4th May 2004

Ensemble pieces can be very difficult to film – recent dross such as Love Actually shows that a film can fall apart if the director does not take the time to develop the characters in his interweaving plotlines. Robert Altman is one of a handful of directors who can manage such a complex structure, and with the brilliant Mystic River, Clint Eastwood joins the talented few.

After a chilling beginning detailing a horrific event in their childhood, the film introduces us to three friends who are once again reunited by tragedy. Each character in the drama is powerfully acted (Sean Penn and Tim Robbins both won Oscars for their roles), and the restrained performances during the film’s most harrowing scenes are particularly effective.

It is cheering to see that Eastwood is still capable of making great cinema after the string of weak films that followed Unforgiven. An adult film dealing with disturbing themes (murder, child abuse), Mystic River is not always an easy film to watch, but its emotional intensity makes it a film well worth viewing again and again.
