Francois Ozon dips his toe into the mainstream with this intelligent mystery, almost a two-hander play, starring Charlotte Rampling and Ludivine Sagnier. Rampling is a successful detective novelist packed off by her publisher to a French chateau in the summer to regain inspiration for a new novel. Her quiet life there is quickly thrown awry with the arrival of the publisher’s daughter who flounces, flaunts and fornicates her way into Rampling irritation.
Watching the influence of the arrival upon Rampling’s quiet, somewhat prim, character is involving entertainment and the methods that the women use to cope and drive the conflict are a step above most mainstream English language films.
This, not the mystery that unfolds in the third act, is the ofcus of the film and a worthy watch.
