Review by David Parkinson on 1st September 2004
Rarely has a stage play been adapted for the screen with such textual fidelity and visual invention. Trimming an hour from Tony Kushner's acclaimed two-part epic, director Mike Nichols turns 360 minutes of moral, social and sexual politics into a compelling human drama that touches on everything from the Bubonic Plague, the Red Scare, Judaism and Mormonism to AIDS, Reaganomics, Perestroika and the Millennium. The dazzling action stems from the separation of a gay and a straight couple and spirals out to touch lives that had become detached from inescapable truths. The ensemble contribution is impeccable, with Al Pacino reining in his proclivity to showboat as bigotted hypocrite Roy Cohn, and Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson each impressing in three contrasting roles
