Based on the novel by Robert Ludlum and adapted for the screen by cult writer Alan Sharp, The Osterman Weekend was the last movie from the brilliant but self-destructive Sam Peckinpah, best known for the stunning The Wild Bunch and Straw Dogs. This is very much a lesser movie, of course, but anything by Peckinpah is worthwhile, and there are many good things here. A psychological thriller tackling the themes of political paranoia and voyeuristic intrigue, the film also provides several of Peckinpah's trademark action set pieces. The cast is striking: Rutger Hauer, Burt Lancaster, John Hurt, and Dennis Hopper. Peckinpah fans won’t hesitate, but non-aficionados may find this deserving of their attention.
