Review by Barry Forshaw on 13th April 2004 Based on the novel by Robert Ludlum and adapted for the screen by cult writer Alan Sharp, The Osterman Weekend was the last movie from the brilliant but self-destructive Sam Peckinpah, best known for the stunning The Wild Bunch and Straw Dogs. This is very much a lesser movie, of course, but anything by Peckinpah is worthwhile, and there are many good things here. A psychological thriller tackling the themes of political paranoia and voyeuristic intrigue, the film also provides several of Peckinpah's trademark action set pieces. The cast is striking: Rutger Hauer, Burt Lancaster, John Hurt, and Dennis Hopper. Peckinpah fans won’t hesitate, but non-aficionados may find this deserving of their attention.
