The Amicus Box Set

Review by Barry Forshaw on 19th November 2003 Hammer's principal rivals in the Horror film stakes gets the deluxe treatment, demonstrating the variable output of the company – but this set features some of their very best (as well as one of their misfires). The Amicus Collection features five of Milton Subotsky's productions' best-loved horror film gems (Dr Terror's House of Horrors, The House that Dripped Blood, And Now the Screaming Starts, The Beast Must Die – the runt of the litter – and the highly enjoyable Asylum, from a Robert Bloch script), beautifully packaged in a novel coffin-shaped presentation box. Contained inside the coffin are terrifying tales of werewolves, vampires, disembodied limbs, serial killers, voodoo dolls, homicidal plants, vengeful witches, evil curses and much, much more. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Amicus Productions was among the world's leading producers of quality horror, sci-fi and fantasy films, with the anthology horror film becoming very much their trademark. Anchor Bay has collected together several of the finest examples of the studio's output, including three of their classic anthologies. You can ignore The Beat Must Die and still get your money's worth. View more reviews by Barry Forshaw
