Brother 2 (aka On The Way Home)
Film Description Continues the story of the young veteran from the Chechen conflict who makes his way as a coldly indifferent hitman in the mafia underworld. The film picks up where the first one left off, with Danila on his way to from St. Petersburg to Moscow. Soon he is on a trail that leads him to Chicago and a whole new corrupt world. A film that goes straight to the rotten heart of both Russia and America.

Review by Barry Forshaw on 31st October 2003 'Of Freaks and Men' marked out Aleksei Balabanov as a director of considerable imagination and individuality, but that study of the perverse hardly prepared viewers for the remarkable Brother, a film that instantly assumed the status of the most powerful Russian gangster film ever made. The picture of the underside of Russian society shown here was as dark and violent as one might expect, but the director's highly individual vision created a synthesis of something between the art-house movie and the tough urban thriller. So could a follow-up provide the same visceral impact? Lightning can strike twice (as French Connection 2 and Godfather 2 comprehensively proved), and it's good to report that is very much the case here. Brother 2 has almost all the energy and invention of its predecessor, even if (of necessity) the novelty of setting and character of the first film is missing. Tartan's DVDs of both films are exemplary. View more reviews by Barry Forshaw
