Film Description

Cynical writer Charlie Kaufmann has a screenplay to turn in, but while his easy-going writer brother can turn out scripts with ease, he's got writer's block. Cage plays both roles in another well-regarded movie from the team that produced 'Being John Malkovich'.

Review by Matt Buckland on 30th June 2003

Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and director Spike Jonze have created a conundrum of a film, full of ideas within ideas and questions about questions.

Adaptation is the story of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, a confused individual overwhelmed by feelings of inadequacy, sexual frustration and self-loathing as he tries to write a screenplay of the non-fiction book 'The Orchid Thief'. His predicament is further confounded by the career ambitions of his overly enthusiastic, freeloading twin brother Donald.

This is the cinematic equivalent of Russian dolls as you discover that his adaptation of the book is the very film you are watching, a film about a film, a self-referential labyrinth. The film opens on the set of the last Jonze/Kaufman collaboration Being John Malkovich, and we see John Malkovich playing himself chastising a fictitious Kaufman played by Nicolas Cage.

Like Being John Malkovich before it, Adaptation is an impressive experiment and a far cry from regular Hollywood output. Kaufman uses this film to highlight his own flawed character and inadequacies, and in doing so exposes the struggle of bringing a script to the screen. The film is surely the most creative trick of the year and grimly funny throughout, an act of pure audacity by its creators.
