Review by Barry Forshaw on 2nd September 2003 There was nothing like the Hammer phenomenon – and there’s been nothing like it since. For stylish, intelligent filmmaking, delivered with flair and dash, the studio turned out some of the finest British films (whether considered as part of the horror genre or not), bolstered by the cream of British acting talent, before the law of diminishing returns (and the emergence of modern-day-set horror films) put paid to the studio's period product. This was the final pairing of Hammer's finest director (Terence Fisher) and actor (Peter Cushing); while the earlier glories are only fitfully present, it's an essential purchase for Hammer aficionados – particularly in this exemplary, uncut DVD transfer.
