Film Description

Packed with witty visual gags and spectacular fantasy, a subversive and deadpan series of vignettes in which (amongst other things) Palestinian lovers meet by an army checkpoint between Ramallah and Jerusalem. A passionate and surreal depiction tale of life in the occupied territories that has drawn comparisons with Keaton and Tati.

Review by Graeme Hobbs on 9th May 2003

The film calls itself 'A Chronicle of Love and Pain', and everything in the film stems from those two places - love for a homeland, family and the ritual absurdities of daily life, pain at loss and suppression. It is also in parts silent comedy, political polemic, a love story, a dance (at its very loosest description), and even at one point a ninja flick.

Suleiman has put together a brave film, one that allows itself to observe, or observe others observing human interactions. That these can be comic and disturbing at the same time shows how well he has tempered the film. The love story is surely one of the most minimal ever filmed, yet the shots of the intertwining hands are so alive that they readily call to mind the wonder of touch. The fantasy sequences are born out of privation and subjection, and a belief in the power of stones (and the mind) against guns. Many things can be suppressed, but never the imagination.

As for the Tati and Keaton comparisons, the beginning of the film shapes up nicely as a quietly absurdist study in sound and action, with repetitions slowly building rhythm and humour (pace Mon Oncle) while yes, it has to be admitted that in some lights Suleiman does bear an uncanny resemblance to old Stone Face himself. Good film.

Political films by Abhijeet Ranadive

These films discuss the politics of their times - sometimes in a very overt fashion that may be termed propaganda, but many of them express a political point of view through a human journey - the journey that the protagonists go through in the film.
