Film Description
Innovative, visceral and brutal cinema. Marcus, his girlfriend and friend decide to go to a party, unaware that their lives are about to be torn apart in an unimaginably brutal way. Shocking, nightmarish, sexually violent and utterly uncompromising, but the events are shown backwards, significantly altering their effect.

Review by Barry Forshaw on 6th June 2003
The considerable furore since its premiere in Cannes premiere last year has barely subsided; and here’s Gaspar Noe’s Irreversible uncut on DVD. More proof that we are being treated as adults by those who decide what we’ll see or hear (but it’s only matter of time before an MP like Graham Bright decides to make a name for himself by legislating against this new wave of cinematic frankness). This saga of revenge and misguided retribution features blistering performance by husband and wife team Vincent Cassel (star of the similarly brutal La Haine) and Monica Bellucci (charismatic in The Matrix Reloaded) but is, significantly, told in reverse. Opening with uncompromising scenes of murder and rape (the killing in a gay S&M club is the most realistic – and grim – you will ever see), the film moves events backwards to examine the issues that led to these horrendous acts. This is a deeply unsettling experience (not least for the vertiginous camerawork, which makes similarly queasy cinematography in Woody Allen’s Husbands and Wives look positively sedate), and those with fragile sensibilities should steer clear. But for those prepared to undertake a gruelling rite of passage, Gaspar Noe, as ever, is the man to take you into new areas.

Review by Thomas Swailes on 31st May 2007
Many who have viewed this film are taken back by the disturbingly realistic acts of physical abuse within this film, the genius that was necessary to portray scenes is often over seen. Within the film the directory styles and skills are second to none. Without the inactive and unique approach to film that Gaspar Noe brings to Irreversible, the film would bring the shock factor to the viewer and therefore would not be as memorable.
I believe that in a world where the crimes portrayed in this film, take place on a daily basis, it is necessary for the media to bring forward this level of social realism to the public, in order to get a positive reaction.
