Film Description

A missile is launched by Professor Quatermass and his team but when it lands back in England two crew members have disappeared and the third, who is barely alive turns into a 'thing' that starts killing humans and animals to feed its transformation. Review by Barry Forshaw on 3rd April 2005

The reputation of Val Guest as a director grows ever greater, and the days when he was dismissed as a mere technician are long gone. This intelligent and stylish adaptation of the classic Nigel Kneale SF TV shows that once chilled the spine of the nation triumph over the rather stolid performance of American import Brian Donleavy in the title role as the curmudgeonly scientist, and look even today as two of most ambitious and intriguing SF films ever made in this country. Special effects technology may have moved on, but the skill and craftsmanship here is typical of Hammer in its heyday, before the studio lost its way in the latter years. With Quatermass and the Pit also available on DVD, collectors may now acquire the complete Nigel Kneale trilogy: even the rather compromised finale, The Quatermass Conclusion (with John Mills in the title role) has been notified for release.
