The Fourth Man
Film Description This lacerating movie by the director of Robocop and Basic Instinct is a remarkable experience. Gay novelist Gerard Reve meets the bewitching blonde Christine only to have premonitions of death. In addition, he falls for her bisexual boyfriend. If her previous three husbands died mysteriously, could she be lining up here next one and could Gerard become that fourth man? Blackly comic in tone draped in gothic shades, this is Verhoeven at his most Hitchcockian, and is the last film he made before decamping to Hollywood.

Review by Ezekiel Lee on 8th May 2006 There's something really intriguing about this Verhoeven film. Unlike "Hollow Man", "Robocop" or that old time favourite of his films, "Total Recall", the premise is somewhat cliched but the execution of the scenes are just so stylish it reminds one of "The Omen". So many thrillers fail miserably at pacing and editing, the essense of all good horror and thriller movies but "De Vierde Man" (original Dutch title) clears it masterfully.

Review by anonymous on The three men in Christine's life share one thing in common...they are all dead. Now Christine has a new boyfriend, and he's in for a big surprise. Verhoeven's blackly comic horror-thriller was his final Dutch language film.
