Film Description

A lively tale of a pregnant Salford teenager, her mother, and her unlikely friendship with a homosexual. Time has left its mark on many of the innovative British new wave films of the Sixties, but Richardson's affecting film of Shelagh Delaney's play remains as fresh and powerful as ever. Rita Tushingham's groundbreaking performance looks as fresh today as it did when the film first appeared.

Review by Paul Ferguson on 8th July 2004

Kate Rusby has the song on her album "Little Lights" & I think it's the "good ship sails on the alli-alli oh" - I remember singing it when I was a kid ...

Brilliant film, brilliant play - she wrote a book of short stories called "Sweetly Sings the Donkey" (1963) - well worth a look.

I agree that time has affected this film far less than it has other "free cinema" classics. I suppose this says a lot for the script, not that I'm suggesting it is timeless - rather, perhaps, that it was well ahead of it's time.

Article - "Free Cinema" by Michael Brooke
Saturday 21st January 2006

"With a 16mm camera, and minimal resources, and no payment for your technicians, you cannot achieve very much in commercial terms. You cannot make a feature film and your possibilities of experiment are severely limited. But you can use your eyes and your ears. You c...  View article in full
