Film Description

Remake of the rat pack “classic”, Soderbergh stylishly sends 11 men to rob a casino in sensational fashion. This is by far his lightest (and weakest) film. It’s pretty and tasty - much like candyfloss.

Review by Barry Forshaw on 9th October 2002

There’s no denying the chutzpah of Steven Soderbergh and his stellar cast taking on the effortless cool of Sinatra, Dino, Sammy and Co in this remake of the most famous Rat Pack movie. Actually, though, Sinatra lavished far more attention on his peerless records than he did on his movies (with the exception of The Manchurian Candidate) and this is a much more solidly crafted piece of entertainment than its predecessor. Soderbergh is quite as adroit at the mechanics of a popular piece of entertainment such as this as he is in his more ambitious projects, and the self-deprecating charm of the stars makes this far more than an exercise in nostalgia. The film is quite as entertaining as it is unlikely -- more than Lewis Milestones' original film, there are constant reminders that we're not supposed to take this unlikely heist of three Las Vegas casinos too seriously. The DVD transfer and extras are exemplary.
