Film Description

Hallucinogenic Thai Western, quick-drawing a love triangle whose angles are defined entirely by the ricochet of bullets. It's high kitsch in colourful chaps, and you won't see anything quite like it unless John Waters decides to make Once Upon A Time In Baltimore.

Review by Andy Mckay on 8th April 2004

Imagine John Waters and Sam Peckinpah got together to make a western having taken a wagon-load of mindbending pharmaceuticals, with a budget that wouldn't buy a Hollywood film crew breakfast. You wouldn't bet on that one being greenlighted would you?
Well, Tears Of The Black Tiger could be that movie. An homage to the Thai cinema of the fifties, Tears is a kitsch, funny and downright strange hallucinatory western that is highly camp and highly entertaining.
Essentially a tale about a doomed pair of lovers whose happiness is dependent on her powerfull father and his status as the most wanted outlaw, the film unfolds its tale in vibrant pastel hues and over the top gun battles. Add a Clark-Gable-in-Village-People baddie, resplendent with eye-liner moustache and you have a movie the like of which you have probably never seen before. Tears is well worth a look, although its probably better described as an experience rather than a movie!
