George Lucas' first feature - a remake of a sci-fi short he made as a student at UCLA - is more cerebral than his later blockbusters. It bombed at the box office, but is fascinating to watch now. Donald Pleasence stars.

Review by Gary Ramsey on 2nd August 2004

Written and directed by George Lucas several years before his era-defining Star Wars saga, THX 1138 is a peek into a dystopian future where a totalitarian state pump sedative drugs into the bald worker drone population. Robert Duvall plays THX 1138 who begins to sink secret stimulants and is finally jailed after making companion LUH 3417 pregnant. Aided by a typically creepy Donald Pleasence as SEN 5241 all three attempt to escape from the sterile police controlled confinement to a libertine new world. Adapted from a short film Lucas made at University and produced by Francis Ford Coppola, THX 1138 lacks the verve and pace of his later sci-fi efforts but the weighty atmosphere is lightened by the crystal stylishness of the setting. Whilst cooked up in the overheated frenzy of early 70’s Hollywood this intriguing slice of future-shock has a carefree 60’s vibe at its core.
