In a film that would later inspire his acclaimed Black Book, Verhoeven offers a complex account of the choices confronting a group of student friends after the German invasion of The Netherlands in 1940. Reuniting Verhoeven with Hauer, Soldier of Orange is a sprawling, epic war film that follows a group of Dutch students whose lives are splintered by the Nazi invasion. The astounding set-pieces are fortunately never in danger of overshadowing the human drama, as it is in the emotional details that the horror of the bigger picture is explored. Being a Verhoeven film, a number of sexual liaisons allow the director to indulge in his trademark (gratuitous) nudity.
