Film Description

In a film that would later inspire his acclaimed Black Book, Verhoeven offers a complex account of the choices confronting a group of student friends after the German invasion of The Netherlands in 1940. Some choose to resist, others are forced to collaborate, but few of them live to see victory. Featuring excellent performances from Krabbe and Hauer.

Reuniting Verhoeven with Hauer, Soldier of Orange is a sprawling, epic war film that follows a group of Dutch students whose lives are splintered by the Nazi invasion. The astounding set-pieces are fortunately never in danger of overshadowing the human drama, as it is in the emotional details that the horror of the bigger picture is explored. Being a Verhoeven film, a number of sexual liaisons allow the director to indulge in his trademark (gratuitous) nudity.
