Review by Searle Kochberg on 29th May 2002

treat is in-store for you as you follow the rise and fall of 2 Ivy Leaguers -
Kaleil and Tom - as they launch themselves into the giddy world of dotcom frenzy
just before the financial bubble burst on them in April 2000. Startup.com is made
by Chris Hegedus - the partner of the legendary fly-on-the-wall documentary maker
Don Pennebaker - and the Lebanese film-maker Jehane Norjaim. They ensure that
nothing is allowed to interfere with the funny/sad/crazy story of the launch of our
boy's website, "GovWorks.com." Both characters are nicely delineated and
contrasted: Kaleil is all bravado and shtick, whilst Tom is an indecisive and
sensitive "anorak." In this film, the 2 women directors poke fun at the male
preserve of new technologies, power and wealth, affording members of the female
supporting cast (girlfriends, mothers, secretaries) the opportunity to deliver wry
asides about the potency of male performance at work and at play.

In both Dark Days...  View article in full
